Che Adams now set to stay at Southampton as they fail to move forward with move for Sunderland star Ross Stewart because of his injury, sources told Football Insider.
The Saints had agreed terms with Stewart and had Sunderland accept an offer.
But it is understood the deal with Stewart fell through after he headed south on deadline day for a medical.
It means that Adams will no longer leave St Mary’s Stadium, a blow to their many Premier League suitors, including Everton, Wolves and Bournemouth.
Football Insider first revealed on Friday (September 1) that Wolves and Bournemouth were in talks over a move for Adams.
The 27-year-old has started the 2023/24 campaign in fine form, scoring three times in four appearances for Southampton.
Russell Martin’s team has made an unbeaten start to the season.
Adams featured in Southampton’s first three league matches before being left out of the squad entirely for their clash against Queens Park Rangers last Saturday.
The former Sheffield United and Birmingham City striker scored 10 goals in all competitions last season despite Southampton’s disappointing campaign.
He has scored 34 goals in 149 appearances in total for the Hampshire-based club since joining them in a £15million move from Birmingham.
Stewart is yet to play for Sunderland this season due to injury, but the 27-year-old could now return to the Black Cats fold after his move to Southampton fell through.
