Sheffield Wednesday 0-1 Ipswich Town – Conor Chaplin goal gives Tractor Boys narrow win

Conor Chaplin’s goal was enough to give Ipswich victory over struggling Sheffield Wednesday.

Ipswich remain among the Championship leaders after beating Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough.

Conor Chaplin came back from Leif Davis’s withdrawal just before half-time to seal the points and Owls goalkeeper Devis Vasquez was the only reason the visitors didn’t win by more.

Ipswich remain perfect on their travels and are third, just one point behind leaders Preston.

Wednesday remains winless with just one point from its first six games.

The visitors started brighter and Vasquez had to get down quickly to deny Freddie Ladapo a fourth goal in three games in the 14th minute when the striker headed home Wes Burns’ low cross.

Burns then entered the box and saw a low shot from an angle parried by the keeper in the 36th minute, with Chaplin’s follow-up going past the post.

Michael Smith diverted a header from a free-kick well over the bar in a rare Owls attack before the deadlock was broken at the other end just before the break when Town built through the back and a nice pass from Massimo Luongo found Leif Davis on the left. .

He raced into the penalty area before cutting for Chaplin who curled a left-footed shot through a forest of legs and past Vasquez for his third goal of the season.

Davis went with a shot before the break, but five minutes after the restart Harry Clarke was denied a second for Ipswich when his bullet header from a Nathan Broadhead cross was saved by Vasquez.

Ipswich striker George Hirst, son of former Owls forward David, came off the bench against his former team and quickly sent an angled lob over Vasquez’s crossbar before seeing a low shot saved by the left hand of the goalkeeper.

Vasquez also denied Broadhead from an angle in the closing stages, while Owls substitute Ashley Fletcher’s wayward header was as close as the hosts came to an equalizer.

Sheffield Wednesday manager Xisco Munoz said:

“All I can say is sorry (to the fans) because I am very, very disappointed with the first 45 minutes. After that the team had a good reaction, but not enough.

“For me, you have to give the same level and intensity for 90 minutes.

“I can say ‘I’m sorry’ to the fans today because I was very, very frustrated with the first half. If we don’t change it’s impossible to take points because the Championship is one very, very, very high level.”

Ipswich boss Kieran McKenna told BBC Radio Suffolk:

“It’s difficult to choose one thing. I loved the match, the performance and the result. It was an important event for us today. We failed to win here in the last two visits and it’s a barometer for us as a team.team.

“We imposed ourselves in the game, we created big chances, we pressed well, I thought it was a great performance. We scored a goal before half-time but we probably deserved a bit more than that.

“In the second half I thought we should have led by two or three. The last 20 minutes were nice because when you don’t score the second goal you have to see the game in a different way, defend with organization and resilience and digging.”.
