Key events

Thanks for reading this clock! Night of night.

So, it’s a hell of a draw. Holders Manchester United host Crystal Palace in one of five Premier League matches. The pick of the bunch is probably Newcastle-City, but everyone else looks pretty tasty too. Salford’s reward for beating Leeds is a visit to Premier League side Burnley, while Lincoln’s defeat to Sheffield United earns them another timid game at a top team in West Ham. People sometimes bash this competition, but the second round was wonderfully entertaining, and the third round revealed quite a few potential crackers. Good old League Cup!

Full-time results

Carabao Cup second round

  • Chelsea 2-1 AFC Wimbledon

  • Doncaster Rovers 1-2 Everton

  • Harrogate Town 0-8 Blackburn Rovers

  • Nottingham Forest 0-1 Burnley

  • Sheffield United 0-0 Lincoln City (Lincoln wins 3-2 on pens)

Champions League qualifiers

  • AEK Athens 1-2 Royal Antwerp (agg. 1-3)

  • Copenhagen 1-1 Rakow Czestochowa (agg. 2-1)

  • PSV Eindhoven 5-1 Rangers (agg. 7-3)

FULL TIME: Doncaster Rovers 1-2 Everton. What beginnings for Beto, the Adrian Heath nowadays. But what a spirited effort from the Football League’s bottom club.

FULL TIME: PSV Eindhoven 5-1 Rangers (agg. 7-3). It’s the Europa League for the Light Blues. Sweet revenge for PSV, eliminated Champions League at this point by the Rangers last year.

FULL TIME: Nottingham Forest 0-1 Burnley. Burnley snatched a late winner, sending the four-time winners crashing out at the first hurdle. On Sky, Forest fan and Cub journalist Stuart Broad smiles wryly. He’s going to turn off his phone tonight, he says.

AIM! Doncaster 1-2 Everton (Danjuma 88). Beto scored his first goal for Everton tonight; It’s now Arnaut Danjuma’s turn! He cuts in from the left, drops a shoulder to make space and launches a low shot to the bottom left. Everton turned the situation around, and in a certain style, it must be said. As superb in the second half as terrible in the first.

FULL TIME: Sheffield United 0-0 Lincoln City (Lincoln wins 3-2 on penalties). John Egan scores a terrible penalty over the bar and Sheffield United become the first Premier League team to be knocked out by lower league opposition.

FULL TIME: Chelsea 2-1 AFC Wimbledon. The Dons made Chelsea work for their victory. Mauricio Pochettino’s dream of a first trophy in English football continues!

Hats off to Beto, who didn’t let this horrible effort bother him. After equalizing with a nice kick, he now hits the woodwork with a header. He seems like a player with extreme highs and lows. Another agent of chaos on Merseyside? What an artist.

AIM! PSV Eindhoven 5-1 Rangers (Goldson and 81st); overall 7-3. It’s completely ridiculous. Jack Butland throws a pass to Connor Goldson, who doesn’t look around and throws a pass to the bottom left. Michael Beale’s mantle is not yet in the hot seat, but a defeat against Celtic this weekend would put him in the hot seat.

AIM! PSV Eindhoven 4-1 Rangers (Veerman 78); overall 6-3. Joey Veerman pivots and directs a shot to the bottom left. If it wasn’t over already, it’s now.

FULL TIME: Sheffield United 0-0 Lincoln.
FULL TIME: Harrogate 0-8 Blackburn.

A match goes to penalties. One, uh, isn’t. It’s Blackburn’s biggest away win in its 148-year history!

AIM! Nottingham Forest 0-1 Burnley (Amdouni 90). Burnley found a winner against the run of play! The forest grows strong. Sander Berge launches a counter. A pinball machine in the box. Zeki Amdouni takes it away at the entrance to the penalty area before heading home. Too bad for poor Stuart Broad from the Sky studio, who courageously takes the news on the chin.

The Rangers have not yet given up the ghost. Rabbi Matondo drops a shoulder to make space 25 yards out and sends a curler to the top right corner…but off the post and wide. It’s still 3-1 against PSV and 5-3 overall.

AIM! Doncaster 1-1 Everton (Beto 73). “It’s Adrian Heath time,” writes Gary Naylor, referring to Oxford United, Kevin Brock, Howard Kendall, all that. And there he is, in Beto form! Seconds after being disastrously, comically and clumsily struck from the edge of the box, Everton’s new signing returns, charging down the inside left channel before sticking out his right leg and deftly passing the keeper and into the net. Such a cool, classy and shiny finish! From ridiculous to sublime in no time.

AIM! PSV 3-1 Rangers (De Jong 64); overall 5-3. Uh, rub that. Game over. A free kick on the left for PSV. He entered violently. Luuk De Jong rises highest and raises his eyebrows at the top right. Great delivery, even better header, and there you have it.

AIM! PSV 2-1 Rangers (Tavernier 64); overall 4-3. The dream is not over yet! Todd Cantwell moves to the left. Sam Lammers whistles a cross into the penalty area. James Tavernier slides at the far post. Play!

AIM! Harrogate 0-8 Blackburn (Edmondson 75). James Edmondson runs through the middle to score, and Rovers can start to think about their all-time record victory, which is an 11-0 defeat to Rossendale United at Ewood Park in the 1884 FA Cup.

AIM! Chelsea 2-1 AFC Wimbledon (Fernandez 72). Enzo Fernandez scores his first goal for Chelsea, curling into the right side of the net. A bit of bad luck for Alex Bass in the build-up, as his clearance crashed straight into Ian Maatsen and into the path of the Argentine World Cup winner.

AIM! Harrogate 0-7 Blackburn (Bloxham 72). Harrogate dispatches possession to the edge of their own box. Thomas Bloxham dribbles into the inside left channel and takes a shot to the bottom right. As it stands, it is the biggest away win in Blackburn’s history, beating the 8-2 win at West Ham in 1963.

AIM! PSV 2-0 Rangers (Saibari 53); total 4-2. A diagonal from right to left towards Luuk De Jong, six meters away. De Jong holds on in front of the goal. Ismael Saibari throws it. This looks like the Europa League for Rangers.

AIM! Harrogate 0-6 Blackburn (Gilsenan 67). The 2002 winners showed no mercy at Harrogate. Zak Gilsenan curls a free kick from the right side of the D into the top right corner.

…but the first chance of the second half fell to Doncaster. Everton once again fail to deal with a short corner and the ball falls to George Broadbent, who should do better from the edge of the box. He sends a dribbler who is easy meat for Jordan Pickford. But it was no better from Everton, who came back very late in the second half, having probably had a long conversation with Sean Dyche.

Doncaster and Everton are back. The Blues sent Beto out for his debut. Idrissa Gueye and Ashley Young as well, the latter doing a lot of performative clapping. Come on guys, that kind of thing. Everton must indeed come into play. Youssef Chermiti, Nathan Patterson and Lewis Dobbin are the players who give way.

Wimbledon still holds its own against Chelsea. Conor Gallagher reduced to shooting from distance speculatively. “J Buckley scored for a rampant Blackburn against Harrogate? Rovers fans must sing Hallelujah! Peter Oh, ladies and gentlemen. He’s there all week. Try bottled water.
