Wrexham AFC return to action tonight in the STōK Cae Ras spotlight when they take on Walsall.
It’s the first time the two sides have met since 2007, and Phil Parkinson’s men will be hoping for their first Sky Bet League Two victory of the season.
The Red Dragons picked up their first win of the season last Tuesday after beating Ligue 1 side Wigan Athletic in the Carabao Cup on penalties.
They built on the weekend’s performance on the road at AFC Wimbledon, with a 1-1 draw at Cherry Red Records Stadium.
Elliot Lee opened the scoring in the 22n/a minute, with his deflected shot taking the ball past Alex Bass at the far post.
In the second half, the crowd were subjected to some heroism from Ben Foster, saving Ali Al-Hamadi’s penalty to his right to keep the contest level after an hour.
However, with ten minutes to go, the Dons had another chance from the penalty spot to find an equaliser, and Jamie Tilley did, sending Foster down the wrong way.
Once level, Parkinson’s men launched an assault on the Wimbledon box and should have found a late winner, with Sam Dalby heading for a golden chance.
After the full-time whistle, Parkinson explained that it’s crucial that players continue to build on the minutes they’ve already had.
He said: “I think the guys deserve a lot of credit. There are a lot of positives today. I thought we were resolute as a team, when we chained a lot of passes together, we looked like the team to go and win the game.
“Overall the first week was tough with the opener but I think the response was good against Wigan.
“Like I said before, we’re going to change teams as we pick up speed, so there may be some surprise decisions, but we have to get people firing full throttle.”
LOOK AT THE OPPOSITION
The Saddlers, led by Mat Sadler, recorded their first victory of the campaign on Saturday, with a 2-1 victory at Edgeley Park against Stockport County.
They were ousted from the Carabao Cup by midweek Championship opposition against Blackburn Rovers.
It was a seven-goal thriller at Ewood Park, but a late goal from Ronan Maher could not galvanize a late comeback on Tuesday night.
However, at the weekend they relied on performance, with Danny Johnson and Aramide Oteh scoring in each half to secure all three points.
Ryan Rydel scored for the Hatters in added time late in the second half, but it was never enough to prevent Sadler’s side from claiming victory.
Following their win on Saturday, the Walsall boss explained that he was treating tonight like any other game but wanted to reward their depleted travel allowance.
He said: “When you’re in and out on the pitch, it’s just another game for both teams and another game where both teams will be desperate to try and win.
“There will be nothing from me, it’s another Ligue 2 game where we will have to do the basics very well and it will be a very difficult game for us to try and get three points.
“We’re going to go out there and try to do our best.”
