Jimmy Fallon has reportedly apologized to The Tonight Show staff after Rolling Stone published allegations from current and former employees claiming a toxic work environment behind the scenes at his late-night show.

Rolling Stone claimed to have contacted 80 additional current and former employees, but “not a single one agreed to speak on the record or had positive things to say about their work on the Tonight Show.”

According to the Rolling Stone report, multiple sources claimed that Fallon had a history of “outbursts” and lashing out at staff when under pressure; that the show’s former senior executives had bullied and belittled them; and that guest locker rooms were commonly referred to as “crying rooms,” where employees could release their stress.

Nine showrunners have worked on the Tonight Show since Fallon took over from Jay Leno in 2014; a much faster turnover than comparable late-night shows like Late Night with Seth Meyers and The Late Show With Stephen Colbert.

“No one said to Jimmy, ‘No’. Everyone walked on eggshells, especially the showrunners,” a former employee told Rolling Stone. “We never knew which Jimmy we were going to get and when he was going to have a seizure. Look how many showrunners have moved so quickly. We know they didn’t last long.

“It was like if Jimmy was in a bad mood, everyone’s day was ruined,” another former employee said. “People weren’t joking around in the office or standing around talking to each other. It was kind of like you’re focusing on everything you need to do because Jimmy’s in a bad mood, and if he sees that, he might fly away.

Fallon’s reps declined to officially comment to Rolling Stone about his alleged behavior. An NBC spokesperson told the magazine: “As in any workplace, employees have raised issues; these were investigated and action taken where appropriate. As is always the case, we encourage employees who believe they have experienced or observed behavior inconsistent with our policies to report their concerns so that we can address them accordingly.

The Tonight Show is interrupted due to ongoing writers’ and actors’ strikes at Hollywood. Fallon and fellow late-night show hosts Colbert, Meyers, Jimmy Kimmel and John Oliver I started a group podcast to raise funds to support their staff as strikes continue.
