Her passing was announced in a statement released by her agent in which it was revealed that she passed away “peacefully” last Saturday.
She was apparently in the company of her husband, best friend and carer during her final moments.
Jane made her first appearance on the BBC soap as Anita in 1997.
The declaration of EastEnders The star’s agent read: “It is with profound sadness that we have to announce the passing of Jane Whittenshaw, a much loved and highly respected client for over 30 years. She passed away peacefully last Saturday, with her husband Hugh, her best friend Rebecca and carers by her side.
“In addition to being a valued client, Jane was a dear friend, generous to the point of fault and a lot of fun to be around.
“She was an immensely talented actress and voice superstar, leaving an extraordinary legacy of over 500 radio plays, thanks to multiple appearances on the BBC Radio Rep and numerous independent productions.
“She was a true professional, an absolute joy to work with and loved by all who did. We offer our deepest condolences to Hugh and the family.”
Jane has also made guest appearances on other popular programs and cult classics like The Bill, Silent Witness, Grange Hill, The Green Wing and Call The Midwife.
Her last role dates back to 2022 when she appeared in the All 4 I Hate You series. She also performed for the Royal Shakespeare Company on stage and was also a member of the BBC Radio Drama Company, recording some 400 plays.
