14. Maguire could have a decent career at a midtable side that sits deep and counter attacks. United played this way in Maguire's first season, and he was good enough with two hard working journeymen midfielders ahead of him. England under Southgate play that way, and Maguire is okay, decent, not awful in that system and with that level of protection. It will a permanent indictment of how bad the player recruitment at United was in the Glazer/Woodward era that they paid 80 million on Maguire for a club that wants – indeed needs – to play on the front foot with a high line. I actually feel bad for the man as a human being at this point – he's being asked to do something he is not equipped to do, and failing at it badly in front of millions of viewers every week. Any time he comes on the pitch you can see the panic and chaos spread in the United defence.

    And of course all the English media/pundits still pretend its a mystery why he is dropped for his club. It is best for all concerned if Maguire goes in January. I think United would be happy to get 30 million, plus freeing up his wages to draw a line under things. In this context, Rio isn't wrong – surely Maguire is talking to his agent and looking for a move if Shaw is preferred at CB over him.
