England against Argentina takes place tomorrow (Saturday September 9) – the opening clash for the two Pool D teams in the Rugby World Cup 2023.
Steve Borthwick’s England team could hardly have sustained a more disastrous and chaotic rise to power At the biggest tournament in the gameand expectations for the 2019 finalists are at a historically low level.
England suffered their first ever defeat against Fiji in a warm-up match at Twickenham last month, and their form following their fourth-place finish at the tournament Six Nations also saw them lose to Wales and Ireland.
However, that’s only half the story of their dismal preparations for the World Cup, with Owen Farrell and Billy Vunipola handed out bans for high tackles against Wales and Ireland respectively.
Farrell will be forced not to participate in the match against Argentina and the following week’s encounter with Japan, while Vunipola will be absent for the clash with the South Americans.
However, victory against World Cup dark horse Argentina – managed by former Australia boss Michael Cheika – will go a long way to calming English nerves and improving the public mood around the national team.
