It was a dream start in the Bundesliga for Harry Kane. The 30-year-old England captain scored Bayern Munich’s second goal (74th) in a 4-0 win over Werder Bremen on Friday. Leroy Sané (4′ & 90′) and Mathys Tel (94′) are the other two scorers. The result also comes less than a week after Bayern were crushed 3-0 by RB Leipzig in the DFL Supercup.
“It was fantastic,” Kane said after the game for sky sports. “There was a lot of talk about preparing for the game, and I was looking forward to getting out there and getting started. It started well with the goal at first, but it was a tough game; we created some good chances, but we were missing the end product.
According to Opta, Kane becomes the second England player after former Hoffenheim striker Reiss Nelson to score on his Bundesliga debut. But Kane not only scored Bayern’s second goal, but also assisted Sané for the opener.
Kane got off to a perfect start and Bayern scoring four goals is good news for fans of Germany’s record-breaking champions. But there are also negative takeaways. While Bayern scored the opener, the goal was a gift from a Bremen side who played with a high defensive line and lacked significant pace.
This lack of pace also cost Bremen the opportunity to make life more uncomfortable for the first 20 minutes of the second half. In full control of the first 45 minutes, the game seemed to slip away for Bayern, with Bremen emerging from the dressing room determined to make things interesting.
As was the case last week against third division side Viktoria Köln, Bremen struggled with pace and then, after 75 minutes, ran out of gas. As a result, Bayern were able to put the score up and walk away with what will look like an easy 4-0 win on paper.

Bayern’s victory story is more complicated, however. Because the same flaws that were apparent in Bayern’s 3-0 loss to RB Leipzig were still very apparent, even with Kane Bayern struggled to put chances, and in defense there is a feeling that a team with pace could overtake this side in the same way the Red Bulls have did last Saturday.
“They came out strong in the second half, and that gave us problems for the first five to ten minutes,” Kane told Sky. “But overall we kept calm and scored the second goal there and then the boys finished it from the bench.”
Indeed, Kane’s second goal seemingly put the game to bed. A fine run from Alphonso Davies opened Werder; his pass found Kane just outside the box between two defenders, and with plenty of space the Englishman was able to drive him home just inside the box. Sané then Tel added two more to complete the score.
The positives of the game then were the fact that, unlike last week, Bayern kept a clean sheet and star signing Harry Kane got off to a perfect start. As for the offense’s flaws, the chemistry between Kane and his teammates is sure to improve. On the defense side, Tuchel must show that he can finally find a solution to Bayern’s tendency to die out in periods. Bremen failed to capitalize on Friday where a stronger side would surely have scored.
Either way, the positives remain, especially for Kane, who looked impressed with his first-ever Bundesliga game. “The fans on both sides were amazing throughout the game, really different from some of the Premier League atmospheres I’ve experienced,” Kane told Sky Sports with a big smile on his face.
