For five seasons, De Matteo played Adriana La Cerva, the girlfriend of Tony Soprano’s “nephew”, Christopher Moltisanti. La Cerva came to an abrupt end in the show’s fifth season after Soprano’s team learned she was working with the FBI as an informant.
De Matteo won an Emmy for supporting actress in a drama series in 2004 for her portrayal of La Cerva in its final season.
Commenting on De Matteo’s performance and the series’ central role, The Times wrote in 2004, after La Cerva’s murder, that “Adriana was an innocent volunteer with a criminal record and a dirty conscience, but she was the closest thing to a heart. “The Sopranos” was gone. Without her, after this season’s finale aired Sunday on HBO, the family’s moral center was gone.
Former Times Editor Carina Chocano added: “Sexy and unhappy, Adriana… was idealistic, confident and naive to excess. In recent seasons, after the FBI begins cornering her in cars while ignoring her emotional attempts to make a personal connection, her loyalties become convoluted, a toy chemistry containing a potion of fear, love , denial and good girl obedience. But, everything else aside, Adriana’s blind devotion to Tony’s nephew, Christopher (Michael Imperioli), was as heartbreaking as it was stupid, and stupid as it was heartbreaking.
