‘I love it!’ – Arteta hails new adaptable squad ahead of Crystal Palace visit
The final Premier League game of the weekend is on Monday night with Crystal Palace hosting Arsenal at Selhurst Park. Roy Hodgson is back for another campaign with the Eagles and they made a strong start to the 2023/24 season with a 1-0 win at Sheffield United on the opening weekend.
Arsenal, meanwhile, battled to a 2-1 win at home to Nottingham Forest, with Mikel Arteta’s side hoping to do better this season after finishing second against Man City in May.
The Gunners added Declan Rice and Kai Havertz to their squad over the summer, while Palace lost key winger Wilf Zaha – but have so far brought in Matheus Franca from Flamengo in their big addition. Arsenal beat Crystal Palace despite Takehiro Tomiyasu’s controversial red card
Only Manchester City and Brighton had won their first two games, but the Gunners joined them with six points after a tight win at Selhurst Park.
In a close encounter, captain Odegaard stepped in to return a spot kick in the second half, with the visitors then hanging on for the final quarter of the game after Takehiro Tomiyasu was sent off.

Declan Rice speaking to Sky Sports:
“When you’re a player on this pitch and you’re looking at the clock with 20 minutes to go against a young and athletic Crystal Palace side, you know it’s going to be tough. But you have to have courage if you want to. winning titles and I think in the end we deserved it.
“It was a huge relief to spend 20 minutes. We completely controlled the game when we went down to ten, but we put our bodies on the line to score three points.
“I think at the start of the season we have referee meetings and they explain the rules. We know we are getting yolks because we are wasting time. Watching seven or eight minutes go by can be frustrating, but that’s the new law.
“Against Forest we played a diamond and I was on the left side. Tonight I was a pivot and I fell one place, I learned a lot in four weeks. To play at the highest level, you have to be one of the best and I want to continue to grow.

Good start to the campaign for Arteta’s men: they will face Fulham, Man United and Everton in their next matches, ahead of the North London derby after the international break.

FT’ – Palace 0-1 Arsenal
And that’s the end of the game! The whistle sounds and it’s a big cheer from the away fans, a big fist-shake from Mikel Arteta – the Gunners really had to dig in the last half hour to keep that clean sheet.
Six points in two games for last year’s finalist.

90+6′ – Palace 0-1 Arsenal
Mitchell hits like a shot from just above! Ramsdale beats a cross, sends a ball straight into the left-back’s path… and he smashes the bar. Decent luck but not exploited to the fullest.
Another cross comes in and again the keeper doesn’t hold it the first time – but then he drops the ball the second time and he’s safe.
He is congratulated by his defense but that makes him two escapes in a row.

90+3′ – Palace 0-1 Arsenal
Return to the Palace. It’s not as frenetic in the final minutes after seeing all sevens on the board: will the patient approach pay off?
Arsenal are now supplied at the back with Kiwior as well and Eze’s latest cross floats over everyone and straight to Ramsdale.

89′ – Palace 0-1 Arsenal
A succession of crosses and clearances – Ayew and Edouard both find almost, but not quite, enough space to shoot on goal. Arsenal always do just enough to put a body in the way or close a gap.
Substitutes ARS: Kiwior and Zinchenko replace Odegaard and Saka.
Seven extra minutes have been added, which still leaves enough time for the hosts to find another chance.

Edouard tries to work his way through three challenges but never really has control of the ball to shoot. Eze forces Partey into a hasty clearance – then Mitchell’s cross slips past White and Edouard completely misses his header attempt. He wasn’t settled at all when the ball got to him – that’s Palace’s best chance.

82′ – Palace 0-1 Arsenal
No real ability for Arsenal to come out of their defensive third at the moment, having brought Nketiah out. A series of long balls keep coming back towards them.
Hodgson turns to his bench as he looks for a late point in the Eagles’ first home game of the season.
CRY Submarine: Ward replaced by Rak-Sakyi

A few questions for Coote on Tomiyasu’s two bookings – he only had the ball for the throw-in for eight seconds before being sent off. Looks like the ref made the defender the down guy for an Arsenal all-around then carded him again for that minor altercation a few minutes later.
