Captain James is having the injury assessed after spotting the problem during a session on Wednesday and Chelsea hope to find out the extent of the damage within the next 24 hours.
Right-back James missed the end of last season with a hamstring injury, missing Chelsea’s last seven games.
He had regained fitness ahead of the new season, was named the new skipper and started Chelsea’s season opener against Liverpool on Sunday.
James was withdrawn after 76 minutes at Stamford Bridge but head coach Mauricio Pochettino allayed initial concerns by insisting his substitution was due to fatigue rather than injury.

Similarly, Chelsea also suffered another blow with Trevoh Chalobah (left) suffering from a hamstring strain in training.
It’s a blow for Mauricio Pochettino who claimed James’ substitution was because he was ‘tired’
However, James’ fitness has now scared Chelsea away following his setback at the training ground.
James has been a huge miss over the past few seasons each time he’s been injured, with the impact of his absence evident.
Chelsea signed highly-rated Frenchman Malo Gusto from Lyon for around £30m to give themselves a genuine alternative to replacement James.
Gusto, who replaced James against Liverpool, agreed a January deal before he joined Chelsea permanently before this season.
Meanwhile, Trevoh Chalobah’s injury is also a blow.
Chalobah, according to the Athletichad ‘previously suffered from a minor hamstring problem’ and had ‘aggravated the problem in training’.

He sat out Sunday’s game but featured in four of Chelsea’s warm-up games, including playing the full 90 minutes against Newcastle, but was eliminated after 14 minutes against Fulham through injury.
The 24-year-old is currently being watched by several clubs across Europe who are keen to sign the defender, with Inter Milan have a long-standing interest by acquiring it.
Reports earlier today claimed which still interests Inter Milan the centre-back, who signed a six-year contract extension at Stamford Bridge last October.
This means he will stay with the Blues until 2028, but Athleticism understands that he could spend “about a month” on the sidelines.
