Chelsea are close to signing Olise from Palace for £35m and agreeing a £58m deal for Lavia | chelsea

Chelsea are set to sign Michael Olise and Roméo Lavia after activating a £35million release clause in the crystal palace the striker’s contract and agreeing a fee of £53m plus £5m in add-ons with Southampton for the Belgium midfielder. Olise, 21, and Lavia, 19, want to move to Stamford Bridge.

Olise is expected to be out of action with a hamstring injury until at least the end of September, and the move will depend on the France Under-21 player passing a medical. He would offer Mauricio Pochettino more options in the attacking midfield. If all goes according to plan, Olise will be competing with Raheem Sterling, Mykhailo Mudryk and Noni Madueke for a spot on the wings.

Manchester City has also considered a move for Olise, who was released by Chelsea when he was young. Chelsea pushed the hardest and are confident of a deal. They also considered Ajax’s Mohammed Kudus, Lyon’s Rayan Cherki and Celta Vigo’s Gabri Veiga, who is expected to join Napoli.

Last night the club agreed a fee with Southampton for Lavia, which is just short of that offered by Liverpool for the player, who preferred a move to west London. The deals make it a hat-trick for Chelsea this week after buying Moises Caicedo of Brighton for £115m on Monday, breaking the UK transfer record for the second time this year in the process.

Pochettino is also in the hunt for a goalkeeper after loaning Kepa Arrizabalaga to Real Madrid. He joined for a season after Thibaut Courtois suffered a cruciate ligament injury in his knee, but during his presentation on Tuesday he said he would like to extend his spell, although the Belgian should be fit by then .

Arrizabalaga was first set to join Madrid from Athletic Bilbao in 2018, only for coach Zinedine Zidane to express doubts over the deal, letting him join chelsea instead. Having now made the move, he was asked if he wanted to continue beyond the end of his loan, to which he replied “ojalawhich roughly translates to: God willing.

“Today is the first day,” he said. “I come on loan but we will have time, we will see and I hope that with my efforts and my level of performance, it can happen.”

Arrizabalaga, who received an offer from Bayern Munich, played 163 games over five seasons up and down in London, where he regained his place in the squad last season after playing just 11 league appearances in the two previous campaigns. Although Eduard Mendy was cleared to move to Saudi Arabia in the summer, the £25million signing of Robert Sánchez raised the prospect of Arrizabalaga being ruled out again and he was cleared to move.
