Chelsea 2-1 AFC Wimbledon: Hosts advance in Carabao Cup

Madueke scores a penalty
Noni Madueke scored his second goal since joining Chelsea in January

Chelsea had to come from behind to beat League Two side AFC Wimbledon in the Carabao Cup at Stamford Bridge.

The visitors started well and took the lead through a penalty in the 18th minute.

Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez pounced on Harry Pell as he attempted to take a free kick, and James Tilley made no mistake as he struck the ball powerfully into the center of Sanchez’s goal.

It was also a penalty that brought Chelsea back to level terms just before half-time.

Noni Madueke was brought down by Alex Pearce and the winger dusted himself off to confidently send Alex Bass the wrong way.

Chelsea, who if they complete the signing of Cole Palmer from Manchester City will have increased their spending in this transfer window to around £400m, have had to call on some of their big names from the bench.

And it was £105m midfielder Enzo Fernandez who completed the turnaround when he detected Alex Bass’ poor clearance to shoot from outside the area.

Chelsea set to work to advance to the next round

Johnnie Jackson’s side were not intimidated by their trip to Stamford Bridge.

There are 63 places between the two teams, but Wimbledon managed to cause Chelsea problems with their set pieces and organized long balls.

After taking the lead, Wimbledon didn’t just sit idly by. It took a Levi Colwill interception to prevent striker Josh Davison from scoring on a counter-attack at Wimbledon.

When Chelsea equalized, it was no surprise that it came via Madueke, who had been the Blues’ most brilliant striker.

Mauricio Pochettino was far from satisfied with his team’s performance, however, and went down the tunnel minutes before the end of the first half.

Ali Al Hamadi, introduced in the second half, saw a shot blocked by Axel Disasi after good work at the edge of the area.

Chelsea then brought in Malo Gusto and Fernandez as they looked to avoid a cup defeat.

Fernandez saw an effort from around 30 yards saved before palming away Bass’s deflected clearance to put Chelsea into the third round with his first goal for the club.

It could have been more comfortable for Chelsea, but evening captain Conor Gallagher fired home from inside the box in added time.
