Tottenham have agreed a £47.5million fee with Nottingham Forest for Brennan Johnson.
The striker now heads to London for a medical before sealing his move ahead of Friday’s 11pm deadline.
Spurs will pay £47.5m for Johnson with a 10 per cent sell-on clause, although further discussions with Forest are needed over the structure of the payments.
Forest are now ready to complete a deal for PSV midfielder Ibrahima Sangaré, who is in London and can undergo a medical in the capital.
Forest needed the money raised from the sale of Johnson in order to progress their plan to buy Sangaré while respecting financial fair play regulations.
Forest were unwilling to sell Johnson and waited for an offer worth around his asking price of £50 million.
The East Midlanders are expected to replace Johnson with Chelsea winger Callum Hudson-Odoi.
Brentford were also keen on Johnson, while Chelsea have cooled their interest in recent days.
Spurs also considered Barcelona player Ansu Fati – who joined Brighton on Friday – and Johan Bakayoko – who is expected to stay at PSV after turning down a move to Brentford – before joining Johnson.
The 22-year-old will help replace Harry Kane, who joined Bayern Munich earlier this summer.
Spurs are keen to sign a versatile striker who can play in a variety of advanced positions, rather than a traditional No.9.
Versatile Johnson would provide valuable depth
Joe Shread, Sky Sports football reporter:
Johnson is far from a full-fledged replacement for Harry Kane – but that suits Tottenham.
After letting their top scorer leave for Bayern earlier this summer, Spurs are understandably keen to strengthen their attacking line.
But the north London club is not looking to replace the most prolific number 9 in its history with a player with a similar profile.
Instead, Spurs want a versatile striker who can play multiple roles in Ange Postecoglou’s front three – and Johnson fits the bill.
The Wales international lined up on the wing, behind the striker and as a centre-forward on several occasions last season as Forest boss Steve Cooper steadily tweaked his system.
Johnson has consistently performed – regardless of his role – racking up impressive stats on a variety of offensive metrics compared to his teammates, as shown in the graph below.

If Johnson swaps East Midlands for Spurs, he will be able to compete with Dejan Kulusevski on the right wing, Heung-Min Son on the left wing and Richarlison in the middle.
At just 22 years old and with just one top-level season under his belt, the 19-cap international should have plenty of room for improvement in Postecoglou’s promising new era.
